Arenal has been considered a volcano since the 19th century, although in those years it was known as Costa Rica Volcano and Rio Frio. Some estimates state that the volcano is more than 4000 years old. This region of Costa Rica was unexplored up until 1937, when some explorers discovered the summit that year.
The most infamous explosion of the Arenal Volcano occurred in 1968 following around 400 years of inactivity. That explosion damaged the whole town of Arenal, and took the lives of 87 people. It damaged around 232 square kilometers and went on for various days. The explosion was so intense that it created three new craters. Ever since this massive explosion, the Arenal Volcano has been active and people are able to see small explosions very frequently, typically at night.
